The Transit Mechanic performs skilled work in the maintenance and repair of diesel transit buses, gasoline/diesel utility vehicles and facilities. The work involves performing a variety of mechanical, electrical, plumbing and body repairs. The work is performed in accordance with established procedures and accepted trade practices and requires safe work habits. Transit Mechanics are critical to the daily upkeep of vehicles to ensure public transit services can be maintained and performed efficiently, effectively and safely. This position performs essential daily tasks and is an important part of the Shoreline Metro team.
Generally, Transit Mechanics work a four (4) day rotating work week (10 hours per day) starting as early as 4:45 a.m. and ending as late as 6:00 p.m. on weekdays and 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturdays. Schedules rotate and are selected based on seniority.• Report to work each workday on or before designated check-in time in proper attire including steeltoed safety boots, slacks or jeans, short or long sleeved shirt, provided coveralls and personal protective equipment (PPE);
• Perform preventative maintenance, general and major repair work on transit vehicles, their components and systems, in accordance with established industry procedures including:
• Exchange, retrieve, repair, rebuild or exchange components in disabled buses;
• Repair diesel buses (maintain, troubleshoot, repair, rebuild or exchange components);
• Safely operating and maintaining brake lathe, hoist, sand blaster, fork lift, floor scrubber, and other equipment;
• Safely perform welding and braising operations;
• Document and maintain maintenance logs and all work performed including parts used on work orders;
• Maintain a clean, organized and safe work area;
• Provide oversight and guidance to the hostlers and cleaners;
• Schedule routine maintenance on all transit vehicles;
• Complete work orders including tracking parts, labor and maintenance usage;
• Assist Maintenance Foreman with updating and maintaining the Preventative Maintenance Program for the department;
• Observe and promote safety and enforce safe rules and regulations in the department;
• Fuel and wash buses (as necessary);
• Perform snow removal duties (as needed) for the transit facilities;
• Act as a professional representative of Shoreline Metro and the City of Sheboygan;
• Work in a team environment, assist and train team members when asked/required and be able to work with little or no supervision at times;
• Be available outside of normal work hours to assist with emergency situations;
• Performs other related duties as assigned.• Must possess or be able to purchase a selection of mechanic’s hand tools (US and Metric);
• Must be proficient in computer skills including Microsoft Office and possess excellent math, writing and communication skills.
• Must pass DOT physical examination for drivers and maintain those standards as a condition of employment.
• Must be able to demonstrate an ability to read, understand, retain and recite information in training manuals, notices and standard operating procedures.
• Must submit to FTA required drug and alcohol testing requirements including but not limited to preemployment, post-accident, random and reasonable suspension testing as a condition of employment.
• Must successfully complete pre-employment drug test and physical exam, orientation training and 90day probationary period.
• High school diploma or GED; related vocational schooling or advanced degrees and training preferred.
• Valid WI Commercial Driver’s License, Class B with passenger “P” endorsement. Air brake restriction must also be removed. Valid CDL must be obtained in a timely fashion during training. Experience operating a commercial vehicle preferred.
• Must have a safe driving record.
• Must have experience in structural steel welding and refrigerant handling.
• Must have 2-3 years minimum experience in a maintenance position preferably in public transit, public administration or equivalent experience. • Must have the ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal form.
• Prepare and maintain accurate and complete reports and records.
• Provide effective and courteous customer service.
• Must have ability to act, make decisions, and justify action based on rational thought, good judgment, and logical thought.
• Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of diesel buses;
• Thorough knowledge of the principles of operation, maintenance and repair of transit buses;
• Ability to diagnose operating problems and make repairs using computerized diagnostics programs and I/O systems;
• Awareness of occupational hazards, environmental regulations and safe work practices;
• Ability to work efficiently from computers, schematics, charts, manuals, and written or verbal instruction.
• Must be able to work flexible schedule including nights and weekends;
• Ability to safely lift up to 75 lbs.;
• Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions;
• Capable of repeated standing, bending, kneeling and reaching overhead;
